Words about THALASSA TRAVEL ADVENTURE THALASSA TRAVEL specialises in "off the beaten track" and special interest excursions. We are dedicated to small group "environmental tourism" in which you are an active participant rather than just a passive observer of people, places and things. THALASSA TRAVEL in co-operation with EXALT has developed a series of adventurous excursions devoted to exploration of the Cypriot wilderness. We do not visit any famous sightseeing attractions, and we stick to dirt tracks and goat paths more than main roads. You may choose between several different touring experiences: jeep expeditions to deserted coastlines, spectacular river valleys and isolated forests, full day treks through deep limestone gorges, active waterfalls or across the wild Akamas Peninsula. Whichever you choose, you will find yourself transported to unique hinterland destinations well away from the "grazing zones" the tourists normally see. THALASSA ADVENTURE excursions involve contact with nature and interaction with local culture. That means you will be outside the vehicle more than in it, so you should be prepared to do at least some easy walking during the day. Since the whole idea is to avoid the major tourist centres and to learn something of the history, landscape, vegetation and wildlife of Cyprus, these excursions tend to be more energetic and more intellectually stimulating than coach tours. The sights you will see, the experiences you will have and the food you will eat also tend to be a bit more exotic than normal. THE VALLEY OF THE ALMOND TREES 6 KILOMETRES. GRADE: EASY For those who have never experienced the beauty of the almond trees in bloom, we offer this special full day outing, featuring one of natures most eagerly awaited displays. This trek involves 3 to 4 hours walking on well-defined dirt tracks. It takes place in February and March. THE POTAMOS TREK 10 KM GRADE: EASY Trek through some of the most dazzling walking country on the island to see hillsides carpeted with anemones, asphodel's, orchids and poppies in the springtime and unique bird sanctuaries during the spring and autumn. Crossing active streams and tacking uphill sections provide calorie - burning challenges. THE CIRCUM AKAMAS TREKS 12 KM GRADE: INTERMEDIATE A full day trek with 6 hours walking. You will encounter: extensive open grassland with varied birdlife; abandoned villages with decaying stone and mud brick architecture; deep limestone canyons with plane and oleander trees; dense scrub, pine and juniper forests: coral-topped volcanic peaks; and the isolated northern Akamas coastline with its rocky coves and extremely clear turquoise water. Swimming is optional. STAVROS TIS PSOKAS AND CEDAR VALLEY JOURNEY IN TO THE FOREST SANCTUARIES OF THE WESTERN TROODOS MOUNTAINS Far removed from any inhabited village and accessible only via rough dirt tracks, the isolated forest station of Stavros tis Psokas is hemmed in on all sides by steep, pine-covered peaks. The summits of some of these peaks are used as fire station lookouts, and we'll visit one of these facilities for an awesome view taking in almost half of Cyprus! You will also meet some of the forest rangers, see the Error! Bookmark not defined.and stroll along pine scented forest trails. Participants should be willing to endure bumpy offroad driving conditions. Bring your binoculars. Special Interests: Botany, geology, forestry, wildlife, clean air, relief from urban stress. THE RIVER VALLEY EXPERIENCE HISTORY, GEOLOGY & BIRD WATCHING Abandoned villages, deserted Medieval monasteries, tiny stone built churches and unique bird habitats. History, geology, wildlife and dazzling landscape. All these and more combine to make a day in which you will experience the rustic side of Cypriot life and encounter some of the most undeveloped regions of Cyprus! You will also stroll the goat filled cobblestone streets of a tiny farming village, gaze upon sheer 100 meter limestone cliffs to observe birds of prey wheeling in the air currents, sample the gastronomic wonders of a small village kitchen, hike to an abandoned 16th century monastery and meet spontaneous, friendly village people and have contact with their animals ( donkeys, goats, cats and dogs). THE GORGE TREK 10 KM GRADE: INTERMEDIATE Our most popular trek features an adventure through one of Cyprus' most impressive natural wonders; a giant limestone canyon. This slippery and challenging journey begins at the foot of an isolated goat path and ends on top of a 300 metre cliff. WARNING: This trek should be avoided by those with heart/respiratory conditions, balance problems, fear of heights and/ or a low tolerance for pain and hardship. SURF AND TURF FOR THRILL SEEKERS AND OTHER LUNATICS ONLY For the advanced trekker only. You will be taken over turquoise water to marine environments accessible only from the sea; small offshore islands, underwater caves and connecting tunnels, rocky coves and natural platforms for cliff diving. Snorkelling equipment is provided. Then deep into the Troodos mountains to face the challenge of white water trekking and the intriguing mysteries of fresh water ecology. You will need energy, self-motivation and no inhibitions as you confront stream carved diabase canyons filled with waist deep water, white water rapids, numerous waterfalls and a plethora of thorn bushes. Twisting ankles and banging knees on rocks are common occurrences. Because the landscape does not remain constant and certain tracts of land boast specific interests during special times of the year, we offer a range of different treks on a seasonal basis. These Error! Bookmark not defined. will allow you to experience the best aspects of nature available during a specific season. They are operated on a rotating schedule. |
